KUSIMAYO PROGRAMS THOUSANDS OF DREAMS
Thousands of Dreams is our early childhood nutrition programme designed to combat anaemia and chronic malnutrition. We began in 2008 with just 8 children and currently support 552 children (aged 0 to 5) across 42 rural communities in Puno.
We provide:
- Daily nutritious breakfasts: supplies are distributed to PRONOEIs (early education centres), where mothers prepare meals based on guidance from a nutritionist.
- School supplies
- Kitchen utensils
- Hygiene kits
- Workshops on nutrition, health and hygiene
- Infrastructure improvements: water pumps, cookstoves, latrines, gas and appropriate furniture
- Haemoglobin, height and weight monitoring twice a year
Results:
- Improved nutrition and reduced anaemia
- Increased school attendance
- Motivated teachers and more engaged parents
- Strong commitment from the community, teachers and mothers
- Closer relationships with communities
Thousands of Dreams is our first programme, through children, we identify community needs and begin collaborative work.
